MATH There are 7 math units that we will be covering this year in math. On level math begins at First Grade Unit 1. Advance Math begins at First Grade Unit 4. Accelerated Math students begin at Second Grade Unit 1. You will know what unit your child is currently on based on the pre-assessment and parent letters that will be sent home at the beginning of each unit. The link below provides access to the units. Each unit includes the standards, vocabulary, games, ideas, and materials if you wish to provide supplement enrichment at home. When we begin a new unit, you will receive a letter outlining the topics we will be teaching. Each unit lasts approximately 5-6 weeks. In our class, students will be participating in Math Centers, Fact Fluency, Technology Practice, Independent Assessments, and Teacher Time during our math block.
In addition to the units, fluency with addition and subtraction is a goal we work on all year in first grade. We will begin adding and subtracting to 10, then to 20. Students should be able to quickly figure out these problems. Daily practice with flashcards at home is encourage. We will be assessing students on fact fluency each week.
BALANCED LITERACY Developing literacy and fostering a love of reading and writing occupy a large part of the first grade day. We explore language in many ways. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening opportunities are presented each day. In our class our balanced literacy block consists of a writers workshop where students will be exposed to a variety of writing, have independent writing time, teacher conferences, peer editing, and sharing. They will also participate in Daily 5 centers. These centers consist of read-to-self, writing center, word work center, read-to-partner, and listen to reading. While students are participating in these centers they will also be participating in flexible teacher grouping as well as practice on technology.
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES/HEALTH The first grade social studies curriculum examines the roles of people working together in homes, schools, communities, states, and countries. Our country’s symbols, land-forms, and citizenship are studied throughout the year. Our neighbors in Mexico and Canada are a focus as well. Children’s literature and supplemental activities support the instruction of the first grade social studies curriculum. Other strong features of our Social Studies curriculum are map skills, historical American heroes such as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington Carver, and Benjamin Franklin, folktales and legends, and economics.
The science and health units include topics such as: nutrition, states of matter, animals, weather and climate, magnets, and sound. These units are also taught through a hands-on child-centered approach. The students explore these topics with experiments and activities that are integrated across the curriculum.
